Tests and certifications for lithium batteries

Lithium batteries are used in countless applications every day.

For the use of lithium batteries, there are various international standards that must be taken into account.

We present the most important ones below:

For the safety during transport of lithium batteries, the regulations of the UN38.3 transport test apply. These regulations are issued by the UN (United Nations) and are valid worldwide. All batteries containing lithium require a UN38.3 transport test.

Safety requirements for portable gas-tight accumulators and batteries made from them for use in portable equipment. Prerequisite for many other standards (e.g. IEC 60601 Medical). IEC 62133 distinguishes in principle between nickel and lithium-ion cells or batteries. Depending on the cell chemistry and whether it is a single cell or battery, different tests must be performed as part of the IEC 62133 approval.

UL62133 is the harmonization of IEC 62133 for the North American market (USA, Canada). With the approval according to UL 62133, the CB Report for IEC 62133 can also be obtained. In the case of approval by UL (Underwriter Laboratories), a quarterly production inspection is required to maintain the certificate. In addition, one piece must be sent annually to UL as a sample for post-qualification.

UL1642 includes testing of the battery cell according to safety requirements of the North American market (USA, Canada).

Basic requirement for UL2054

UL2054 includes testing of a battery pack to safety requirements of the North American market (USA, Canada) for commercial and residential batteries. Not required by law, but strongly recommended for legal and product liability reasons in the North American market.

The basic requirement for UL2054 is the approval of the battery raw cell according to UL1642.

If approved by UL (Underwriter Laboratories), a quarterly manufacturing inspection is required to maintain the certificate.
